The Future of the Penny – A Steel Penny?
Many politicians are discussing the future of the lincoln cent this year. With 2009 being the 100th anniversary of lincoln penny, the United States Mint is producing four new penny designs for the reverse of the lincoln cent. Politicians are debating whether we should discontinue making the penny due to its cost. Other politicians are advocating making pennies out of plastic.
Congressman Peter J. Roskam has been advocating making the lincoln cent out of a copper coated steel metal. What do you think will be the future of the penny? Do you mind switching the penny material from zinc to steel? Please share your thoughts.

January 19th, 2009 at 10:21 amI didn’t watch the video but I totally agree on making the penny cheaper to manufacture if we don’t plan on getting rid of it. Some coin counting machines may go crazy if the steel ends up being too magnetic. Other than some hard plastic/epoxy, I’m not sure what other material is cheap enough to make a penny.

April 5th, 2010 at 7:28 pmEliminate the penny altogether. It is now pretty useless overall and has no value to buy anything. The only reason the congress will not eliminate it is that there would have to be so many adjustments in sales taxes, like the states that have 6%.

I think a steel penny would actually be pretty cool! I do not collect pennies however, so my opinion is not from a collectors POV.
