The Australian Mint just started selling its Fall of the Berlin Wall Silver Proof Coin. This coin is of special interest to me due to the huge effect the Fall of the Berlin Wall had on my life.

Australian Fall of the Berlin Wall Silver Coin

One of my first political memories was President Reagan’s speech at the Brandenburg Gate where he asked President Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.”

Several years after President Reagan made this speech, the Berlin Wall fell. Shortly after the Wall fell, I had the pleasure of visiting the Soviet Union as a student ambassador of the United States. While I was not there to negotiate political treaties or nuclear arms treaties, I think that having the Soviet people meet every day Americans helped to ease tensions between our two nations.

I think that it is great that the Perth Mint has produced a Berlin Wall commemorative coin. Prior to September 11, 2001, the fall of the Berlin Wall was the most important historic event in my lifetime. Freedom and liberty had triumphed over totalitarianism.

This Australian silver proof coin is tribute to the Free world’s collective victory. Western nations like Great Britain, Australia, Germany and France stood with the United States to put pressure on the Soviets to open their society. I think that this Fall of the Berlin Wall Silver Proof Coin is a great way to commemorate this victory.

The 2007 Jamestown 400th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar is one of the most beautiful coins ever issued by the United States Mint. In fact, it just won the coin of the year award for best historical coin. The 2007 Jamestown Commemorative Silver Dollar will go down as won of the best modern commemorative coins produced by the US Mint.

2007 Jamestown 400th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar

The 2007 Jamestown Commemorative Silver Dollar honors the brave men and women who settled Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. The obverse of the Jamestown commemorative coin shows three cultures coming together in Jamestown – the Europeans, American Indians and Africans. The reverse design is of the three ships that were used by the settlers when sailing to Jamestown.

One interesting thing about the design of the 2007 Jamestown 400th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar is that there were different designers for the obverse and the reverse. Donna Weaver designed the obverse and Don Everhart did the sculpting. The reverse design was done by Susan Gamble and sculpting by Charles Vickers.

As a little trivia question, do you know the name of the three boats on the 2007 Jamestown 400th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar? If so, tell me the answer in the comments below.

The 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar goes on sale on February 12, 2009 according to the United States Mint 2009 Product Availability Schedule. February 12 marks the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. In honor of Abraham Lincoln, the Congress ordered the Mint to produce the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar.

This US commemorative coin is composed of 90 percent silver. It weighs 26.73 grams and is 1.5 inches in diameter. There will be a total of 500,000 Lincoln commemorative coins produced.

The obverse has a picture of Abraham Lincoln with the Motto In God We Trust and the Word Liberty. The reverse of the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar features a quote from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

It amazes me that Abraham Lincoln only served one term as President of the United States. He served from 1861 to 1865 when he was assinated by John Wilkes Boothe. Except for George Washington, no American President had a greater impact on the country than Lincoln. He lead our country to victory in the Civil War and ended slavery in America. George Washington is my favorite President. But, Lincoln has to be my second favorite.

Will you buy a 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar?
