Kennedy Half Dollar Guide
This Kennedy Half Dollar Guide will help those coin collectors out there to fully grasp and understand what happened to this coin. Legacies last forever if they are meant to. The Kennedy legacy is one that will last the test of time. This coin was designed and minted in the year after his assassination. Not only will this coin last as part of that legacy but also the missions to the moon and his unchallenged courage in the face of the many dangers he faced during his life time.
The very first year of its minting, this Kennedy half dollar was made of 90% silver and 10% copper. The following year the silver content was lowered to 40% and in 1971 all the silver was removed and the coin was made of a copper-nickel alloy.
This coin replaced the Franklin half dollar 1964 and was for the most part not used. Many Americans kept them as mementos of the late great president. In 1965 President Johnson took U.S. coins off the silver standard and the silver of all American coins was drastically reduced or eliminated. Because of these two factors many stores and banks stopped stocking the half dollar. Most cash register drawers no longer have a place for them and vending machines do not accept them. This has curtailed circulation of this coin.
One of the big changes for this coin happened to commemorate the bicentennial. The back was redesigned to show Independence Hall. This did spark interest in the coin but that lasted only for that year.
Each year there are over 3 million coins minted but most are kept in storage because of the lack of interest in them. The two years that had over 500 million coins minted were 1964 and 1976. The last large minting occurred in 2001 when 40 million were minted. Since that time the numbers have steadily declined.
