Jefferson Wartime Nickels

One of my favorite coins to collect are Jefferson Wartime Nickels.  Beginning in 1942, the United States Mint began producing new new alloy of silver nickels.  After the Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States went to war and metal became a precious commodity for wartime supplies like ammunition, guns and other military equipment.  These Jefferson World War II Nickels have become favorites with coin collectors.

A complete set of Jefferson War Nickels includes 11 coins, including the following:

• 1942 P
• 1942 S
• 1943 P
• 1943 D
• 1943 S
• 1944 P
• 1944 D
• 1944 S
• 1945 P
• 1945 D
• 1945 S

Please note that the Denver Mint did not produce any Jefferson Wartime Nickels in 1942.  Also please note that during these years, the Mint also continued to produce the regular, non-silver alloy Jefferson Nickels.  You can easily spot a Jefferson World War II Nickel by seeing a mint mark over the dome of Monticello on the reverse.

Jefferson Wartime Nickel Varieties

In addition to these standard Jefferson Wartime Nickels, there are several well known varieties within these dates.  If you want your wartime nickel collection to also include nickel varieties, you will want to include the  following,

• The 1943 P with the 1943 printed over the 1942.  This variety is often referred to as the 1943/2.
• 1943 P Doubled Eye.  This variety contains a doubled die error causing the face of Thomas Jefferson to have two eyes.
• 1945 P Doubled Monticello and Five Cents on the reverse.  This variety is typically called the doubled Monticello.

   War nickels—

   I love the history of responding to wartime shortages with alternative materials

   I love Thomas Jefferson!

   They remain a great bargain for new collectors.

   I can still fish them out of junk silver bins and maybe even find one roll searching.

   What isn’t to love?

   HI! I was searching Google for interesting JEFFERSON SILVER WARTIME NICKELS and I found your blog. Very nice. I like the fact that you are interested in why someone likes the wartime nickels.

   I like the silver wartime nickels because nickels are my favorite coin.I do enjoy sifting through the Lincoln pennies (wheat and memorial) and searching for errors and varieties, and my all-time favorite coin design is the American Eagle Silver Bullion $1, but having said that, I have always liked the Jefferson nickel out of all of the denominations throughout history. I like the size of the coin and I, too, like Thomas Jefferson. Another reason I like nickels is because they don’t have the reeded rims. (Perhaps that is the reason why pennies and nickels are my favorites!)

   I like the silver war nickels because of the incredible history they hold. I have quite a lot of them, and I always think to myself, “I wonder who was carrying THIS coin in his or her pocket at one time or another,” or “Maybe someone had this coin in his or her coin collection during the middle of the last century.”

   I also like the way the silver war nickels tarnished over the years. I think maybe some people are turned off by the tarnish, but I think it gives them character. If a coin is BU, then it obviously hasn’t been carried around by anyone and doesn’t really have a ‘history’ to it.

   Why do I like silver war nickels? I think Richard (above) said it best when he implied, “What’s not to love?”
