Fall of the Berlin Wall Silver Proof Coin
The Australian Mint just started selling its Fall of the Berlin Wall Silver Proof Coin. This coin is of special interest to me due to the huge effect the Fall of the Berlin Wall had on my life.
Australian Fall of the Berlin Wall Silver Coin
One of my first political memories was President Reagan’s speech at the Brandenburg Gate where he asked President Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.”
Several years after President Reagan made this speech, the Berlin Wall fell. Shortly after the Wall fell, I had the pleasure of visiting the Soviet Union as a student ambassador of the United States. While I was not there to negotiate political treaties or nuclear arms treaties, I think that having the Soviet people meet every day Americans helped to ease tensions between our two nations.
I think that it is great that the Perth Mint has produced a Berlin Wall commemorative coin. Prior to September 11, 2001, the fall of the Berlin Wall was the most important historic event in my lifetime. Freedom and liberty had triumphed over totalitarianism.
This Australian silver proof coin is tribute to the Free world’s collective victory. Western nations like Great Britain, Australia, Germany and France stood with the United States to put pressure on the Soviets to open their society. I think that this Fall of the Berlin Wall Silver Proof Coin is a great way to commemorate this victory.
