50 state quarter’s collection
Between 1999 and 2008 the United States Mint produced the 50 state quarter’s collection with the back side of the quarters honoring each individual states of the union. This was done in accordance to a program initiated by the government in 1997. By estimates the U.S. government has made $4.6 billion from this program because so many of these coins have become part of a coin collection.
This program has made 5 new quarters a year for the 10 years is was going. In the year 2007, the U.S. Mint decided to complete the series by honoring the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. These are being minted in the year 2009.
From the records provided by the U.S. Mint, the 50 state quarter’s collection produced 34,797,600,000 individual coins. This makes the average for each state’s coin at 695,952,000 each. But as with anything involving the U.S. government, things are not equal. The state with the highest minting was Virginia with 1,594,616,000 and the lowest was Oklahoma with 416,600,000 coins minted.
Both the mints in Denver and Philadelphia were used to produce these coins. The District of Columbia coin along with the territory’s coins are just like the 50 state coins but in fact under a separate program enacted by the government. This was done in 2007 by the U.S. legislation.
Each of these coins is in circulation and can be found at face value. The earlier ones are already gaining value for an uncirculated coin and will be even more valuable as time goes on. Now is the time to start you coin collection of the 50 state quarter’s collection while the price is still low.
